Dehradun, Dehradun tourism, About dehradun history

Surrounded on the east by the Ganga, on the west by the Yamuna, the Doon Valley is a most picturesque valley at the foothills of the beautiful Shivalik ranges. It has got a salubrious climate and hence is enjoyable throughout the vear.

Previously it was a part and parcel of Garhwal but the Gorkhas captured it and ruled over it for many years until in the year 1814 the Britishers after a fierce battle at Nalapani captured it after paying a very heavy toll in which Major General Sir Robert Rollo Gillespie and many of his officers and men had to give up their lives at Khalanga Fort which was under the control of the Gorkha General Balbhadra   Singh   Thapa.

The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb held Guru Ram Rai in high esteem and helped him in settling down in the Doon. In the year 1699 Guru Ram Rai built the Gurudwara and . hoisted his flag. Till today a big fair is held every year in Jhanda Chowk in the month of March a few days after Holi to commemorate his arrival   in   the   Doon  Valley.
Dehra Dun is now one of the beautiful towns in Northern India. It boasts of a number of educational institutions of repute such as the Doon School, the Rashtriya Indian Military College, the Indian Military Academy,  the Forest   Research   Institute,   to   name   -a   few.
The entire Doon Valley is full of places of scenic beauty and picnic spots. Some of these are Sahastradhara, Robbers Cave, Malsi Deer Park, Khalanga Fort, etc.
